SOCIAL RELEVANCE

Fresh water contamination is a global concern.
About 2.4 billion people are exposed to several diseases includings cholera, typhoid fever, caused by inadequate water sanitation. Additionally, a variety of organic and inorganic compounds, that arise from anthropic activities or by natural environment also contaminates drinking water lowering its quality.
SUNFLOAT wants to challenge this problem to achieve a permanent solution.

Social relevance

PHOTOCATALYSIS

Photocatalysis involves a solid-state catalyst and light as energy source to deploy a series of redox reactions. In a water environment, photocatalysts generate active radicals that "attack" contaminants and break them down into smaller molecules.
SUNFLOAT relies on a floating photocatalytic device that interacts with sunlight.

Photocatalysis

OUR APPROACH

Our photocatalyst is being developed as a nano-structured micro-sized semiconductor extremely active under sunlight. To avoid the issue of the active components leaching in the water medium, SUNFLOAT employs a 3D support. Furthermore, the floatability of the SUNFLOAT is being designed to enhancs the collection of sun rays, improving the photocatalytic process.

TARGET AND APPLICATION

After testing the SUNFLOAT device in the laboratory (using synthetic contaminated water), a prototype with disinfection (anti-bacterial) and oxidant (anti-bacterial and anti-pollutant) properties will be tested in water basins located in Brazil and India.

Water pollution

Water Pollution Guide

Water covers over 70% of the Earth's surface and is a very important resource for people and the environment. Water pollution affects drinking water, rivers, lakes and oceans all over the world.
This consequently harms human health and the natural environment. Here you can find out more about water pollution and what you can do to prevent it.

Water for Africa

Here's what unsuspecting supermarket customers found themselves in front of. The Action Against Hunger initiative to denounce that 319 million Africans do not have access to safe water.
"Water of Africa" is pale yellow, sometimes brown or reddish. In recent days, it has been provocatively put up for sale in stores and supermarkets.
